Have you ever seen anything so magical?
The Masungi Georeserve located in Rizal just experienced a magical moment last night, May 29.
On Facebook, they shared photos of the “firefly trails” that lit up the night sky.
According to Masungi Georeserve, fireflies are an important bioindicators. They are a specie that can tell how healthy an ecosystem is.
Moreover, Bioindicator species are sensitive to pollution and other habitat changes. Therefore, if you see a single firefly, much alone a trail of it, it is a very good sign that an ecosystem is clean and thriving.
In addition to this, these lightning bugs are also beneficial to human beings. Fireflies contain luciferin and luciferase, two rare chemicals used in research on cancer, multiple sclerosis, cystic fibrosis and heart disease.
“We are thankful to see these tonight as it reaffirms our work in protecting the Masungi landscape and restoring its amazing biodiversity.” says Masungi Georeserve on their caption.
